“And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.”
Acts 14:23

The Sacrament of Holy Orders is the Sacrament of service which ordains the recipient to the office of Bishop, Priest, or Deacon. Ordained clergy are called to unify, bless, and teach, as a sign of Christ in the local church and community.

For Jesus to live on and continue his work in the Church, He sent the Apostles to continue his mission; to make followers of all people, to administer the Sacraments, and to lead. The Apostles became aware of their mission at Pentecost when they received the Holy Spirit and started to preach without fear to be continued for all times and to all people. Our Catholic Bishops today are part of a lineage that can be directly traced back to the time of the Apostles.

The Episcopate

(Bishop)

Bishops are chosen and ordained to supervise and lead Priests and Deacons, to unify, bless and teach the people and act as a sign of Christ in the local church and community.

A Bishop is also a member of the episcopal college, who along with the Bishop of Rome (the Pope), guide the universal Church.

The Priesthood

(Priest)

The Priest celebrates Mass and administers the Sacraments. He is called to spread the Good News of God’s love and humanity to the Christian community.

The Priesthood is for baptized men, following the example set by Christ and His Apostles. The discipline regarding the priesthood varies in East and West; the Eastern Church allows married men to be ordained Priests, while the Western Church insists on celibacy.

The Diaconate

(Deacon)

From earliest times, Deacons have held a special place in the pastoral work of the Church; preaching, ministering at baptisms and weddings, and caring for the poor and hungry on behalf of the whole Church.

They have a strong role in assisting Priests and Bishops and serving the people.

Unlike Bishops or Priests, Deacons are allowed to be married.
