"When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled...there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.  And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues"

Acts 2:1-4

Pentecost is the day on which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the apostles.  Before Jesus was put to death, He promised His apostles that He would send His Spirit to comfort and strengthen them. True to His promise, the Holy Spirit was poured out on them on Pentecost, fifty days after His resurrection.

Before the events of the first Pentecost there were followers of Jesus, but no movement that could be meaningfully called “the church.”  From an historical point of view, Pentecost is the day on which the church was started.  This is also true from a spiritual perspective, since the Holy Spirit brings the church into existence and enlivens it.

As with the early church, our mission since that day is devoted to bringing the truth of Christ to those around us by the way we live out our faith and share it with others.

RCIA:  Pentecost Celebration

For members of the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Pentecost marks the end of the postbaptismal catechesis.  There will be a brief ceremonial closing of the baptismal font, followed by a celebration and presentation in the parish hall.  All candidates will receive certificates of baptism and/or confirmation at this time.

Following Pentecost, they will enter into the final phase of the RCIA process: Mystagogy.  This is an important period for spiritual growth and to explore what it means to be an active Catholic.  Their mission is to immerse themselves into the life and unity of the faith community and discern the call to ministry.  The journey of faith continues as we are all called to live our baptismal promise as disciples and the hands and feet of Christ.
