“In a world where there is so much wealth, so many resources to feed everyone, it is unfathomable that there are so many hungry children, that there are so many children without an education, so many poor persons.”
Pope Francis

History of the Sister Parish Outreach Ministry

In 1994 Fr. Jim Poulsen, together with Fr. Kenneth Del Priore of Our Lady of Angels, saw needs in both parishes: for StGG it was the need to share our many blessings with others and for OLA it was the need to receive assistance and support for their low income families. The friendship of these two pastors and the needs of their two parishes resulted in the formation of our Sister Parish Outreach Ministry. Over these many years our generous parishioners have supported our ministry as we serve the wonderful families of OLA. Our first project was a food pantry, filled with weekly donations from StGG parishioners and distributed by SPOM volunteers. This important service provided nourishment for OLA community families for many years.Through our School Supply Drive, Rummage Sale and Tuition Assistance Drive we are helping the OLA families provide Catholic educations for their children at Our Lady’s School. The Blanket Drive helps to keep families warm during the winter. The Thanksgiving Food Drive provides all the makings for a turkey dinner and our Adopt A Family Program helps to make Christmas a day filled with happy surprises and joy for the children and parents.

Our Lady of Angels, located in the Sherman Heights area of San Diego, was built in1906 to serve a mostly Irish community. The community now has a primarily low income, Hispanic population. The OLA office staff is very small but dedicated to serving the needy individuals and families that come through their doors. Their gratitude to our parish is great and they are humbled by the outpouring of love from their sister parish, St. Gregory the Great.

Sister Parish Outreach Ministry members are so very grateful to our generous parishioners.
